Faculty/Instructor Profile
Red Deer Polytechnic’s School of Community, Wellness and Health is hiring multiple Practical Nursing (PN) Instructors to start in August 2023. Our PN program is growing fast and with the support of the Alberta government we will double our student intake by Winter 2025.
The Practical Nurse (PN) program is a two-year diploma that prepares students to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) following graduation and successful completion of the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam. It is an approved program by the CLPNA’s Education Standards Advisory Committee.

There are many ways to join RDP as an Instructor and have a positive impact on students. We have the following 3 options. Apply today!

Part-Time:
  • Our part-time Instructors have a variety of start/end dates between August 16, 2023 to July 31, 2024.
  • This role is ideal for those looking to try out teaching for a short period of time.
  • Lecture courses, Lab courses, and clinical courses are available.

Sessional:
  • Our sessional instructors work full-time from August 16, 2023 to April 29, 2024. There are also opportunities to start in December 2023 – August 31, 2024.
  • This role is ideal for those looking to jump into teaching, build relationships with students and really experience what it feels like to be a nurse educator at RDP.
  • Sessional instructors may teach lectures, labs and clinical sections.

Continuous Probationary:
  • Our Continuous Probationary Instructors will join RDP permanently on August 6, 2023.
  • This role is ideal for those with teaching experience and those looking to make an impact on the Practical Nursing program, building curriculum and ensuring ongoing program success.
  • Continuous Probationary instructors may teach lectures, labs, and clinical sections.

While most courses will be offered at Red Deer Polytechnic Main Campus or Online, there are also opportunities for our instructors to work in Drumheller, Ponoka, Rocky Mountain House, Stettler and Three Hills.

Class times will take place during the day and evening and can be in-person and/or remote. There are also Saturday teaching opportunities for our part-time student cohort. Our instructors have flexibility to do non-instructional work like grading and course preparations during the time that works best for them. You’ll be asked questions as part of this application to help the hiring team determine which type of role could work best for you.

Position Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Associate Dean of the School of Community, Wellness and Health, the successful candidate will have the following key responsibilities:
  • Teaching students in a classroom, lab and/or clinical settings with flexibility for face-to-face, hybrid, or online course delivery
  • Creating a stimulating, effective and learner-centered environment which includes preparing, reviewing and updating course material
  • Marking, and evaluating student work
  • Providing ongoing feedback, guidance, and assistance to students

Instructors will uphold the professional responsibilities of faculty and demonstrate RDP organizational values by following related policies and practices. They will be supported by the Centre for Teaching and Learning and be provided with a comprehensive onboarding experience to help ensure their success.

Instructors will receive additional training, through our Centre for Teaching & Learning, such as the Introduction to Teaching & Learning workshops, as well as mentorship through our Nursing Faculty Navigator program, designed to help our newest instructors successfully transition from clinicians to educators.
Required Qualifications
  • LPN diploma with current registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) or a Registered Nurse with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)
  • Recent Clinical experience
  • Current Heart and Stroke Foundation Basic Life Support Provider or Recertification Certificate
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • A satisfactory Criminal Record Check in accordance with the Polytechnic’s Criminal Record Check policy
  • Current immunizations as per RDP requirements
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred for Sessional and Part-Time instructor positions. A related Bachelor’s degree is required for a Continuous Probationary position.

Salary or Hourly? Salary
Salary Compensation is determined by the highest academic credential received and related experience. The Faculty Association at Red Deer Polytechnic (FARDP) and the related collective agreement provides information on compensation for Instructors at Red Deer
Benefits and Compensation Information
Part-time instructors:
  • Receive an additional 14% of their gross salary in lieu of benefits and vacation pay.
  • Part-time instructors are not eligible for comprehensive health and dental benefits packages.
  • Eligible for individual professional development funding, additional free professional development opportunities offered through the institution, and tuition free classes.

Sessional instructors:
  • Receive paid time off between Christmas and New Year general holidays as well as 8% of their gross salary in lieu of vacation.
  • Eligible for a comprehensive health and dental benefits package, including a Health Spending Account.
  • Eligible for individual professional development funding, additional free professional development opportunities offered through the institution, and tuition free classes.

Continuous Probationary:
  • Receive 45 days of paid vacation annually in addition to paid time off due to Institution closures between Christmas and New Year
  • Eligible for comprehensive benefits health and dental package, including a Health Spending Account.
  • Eligible for individual professional development funding, additional free professional development opportunities offered through the institution, and tuition free classes.
