Position Title Bachelor of Education Instructors - Part-time, Practicum Advisor
Faculty/Instructor Profile
Red Deer Polytechnics Bachelor of Education program is looking for exemplary school leaders who are able to provide both pre-service teachers and classroom mentors support through completing professional practicum. The part-time instructor will provide support to practicum students and mentor teachers in their 3rd year (3500) practicum placements within K-12 Central Alberta schools. Part-time Practicum Advisors are over and above what used to be considered of a University Facilitator.
This new position calls for skilled practice in many of the Leadership Quality Standards with special emphasis on Fostering Effective Relationships, Providing Instructional Leadership and Developing Leadership Capacity to result in quality teaching and optimum learning for all school students. We are looking for strong instructional leaders who can support mentor teachers with both supervision and evaluation responsibilities of pre-service teachers.

Position Responsibilities
Practicum Advisors have an important role in the success of the preservice and mentor teachers. The Practicum Advisor is the main connection between the preservice teachers in practicum and Red Deer Polytechnic. 
  • create positive supportive relationships with the preservice and mentor teachers and other school staff and administration
  • help to strengthen and maintain Red Deer Polytechnic School of Education’s connection with all schools and community partners
  • ensure RDP’s high expectations of professionalism for preservice teachers is developed and maintained 
  • observe, provide feedback, guide, and assess preservice teachers, in collaboration with the mentor teachers
  • be in regular contact with the schools and mentor teachers regarding the on-going development of the preservice teachers 
  • attend and participate in the practicum orientation delivered by the RDP Practicum Facilitator
  • maintain communication with the RDP Practicum Facilitator 
  • provide feedback regularly through conferencing and keep dated, written observation and field notes when observing, guiding and visiting preservice teachers providing evidence for growth and the final evaluation
  • provide support to the mentor and school administration to mediate concerns about a preservice teacher’s performance 

In order to fulfill this requirement, there is an expectation of 2-3 visits to the pre-service teacher’s placement school during their 6 weeks placement. Each visit would contain 3 parts:
  • pre-observation conversations,
  • classroom observation
  • post-observation reflective conversation 
 
The goal of each visit would be to collaborate with the mentor teacher for practice refinement, reinforce best practices and discuss any areas of growth to assist the pre-service teacher in growth planning and developing strong reflective practices.  Practicum Advisors will be responsible for the writing of the evaluation in collaboration with the Mentor teacher.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Education and a Masters Degree in Education, or a related field
  • 3-5 years of successful school administration with demonstrated experience and success as an instructional leader with excellent pedagogical knowledge in curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
  • 3-5 years experience working collaboratively with teachers engaging in professional discussions regarding the Alberta Teaching Quality Standard
  • 3-5 years of experience implementing professional growth, supervision and evaluation processes to ensure that preservice teachers understand and are working toward the Teaching Quality Standard;
  • Articulate a positive vision of an inclusive classroom,
  • Willingness to liaise between District Office Administration, school personnel, and Red Deer Polytechnic faculty and staff.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership or related field
  • Post-Secondary teaching experience
  • Leadership certification with the Alberta Leadership Quality Standard
  • Familiarity using Google Classroom

Benefits and Compensation Information
Part-time instructors receive an additional 14% of the gross salary in lieu of benefits andvacation pay.
