Position Title Sign Language Interpreter
Position Summary
This position provides sign language interpretation services for deaf and hard of hearing students and staff while they are performing their polytechnic-related obligations with the aim of creating an accessible, equitable and supportive learning and work environment in accordance with Red Deer Polytechnic Policy and with the Alberta Human Rights Commission’s Duty to Accommodate legislation.
Position Responsibilities
  • Provide sign language interpretation services for lectures, labs, seminars, practicum placements, rotations, meetings, appointments and exams as assigned.
  • Provide sign language interpretation services for Polytechnic-hosted public events, e.g. convocation, open house, orientation, annual general meetings, alumni events, lectureships.
  • Obtain and study all necessary materials to prepare for interpreting responsibilities.
  • Liaise with instructors to ensure all necessary information and materials are included in preparation package and to keep them informed of service delivery needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of post-secondary training, completion of a college certificate in an interpreting education program
  • Membership in the Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Canada (AVLIC) required
  • Six (6) months to one (1) year related experience required
  • Ability to interpret in any course for a range of deaf or hearing impaired persons using the mode of language the student is using (e,g, American Sign Language, Signed English, Signed Exact English)
  • Understanding of deaf culture, social experiences of deaf and hard of hearing persons, history of education for students who have various levels of hearing loss, and current pedagogical trends for Proven interpersonal skills when working with deaf and hearing impaired persons, communication service providers, instructors and administrators
  • Proficient computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, email, electronic scheduling and internet
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
Preferred Qualifications
  • Four (4) year undergraduate degree, or three (3) year undergraduate degree plus one full additional year of University or equivalency is considered an asset
  • Previous experience interpreting in a post-secondary institution is considered an asset
Salary or Hourly? Hourly
Salary $30.04 - $35.14 per hour
Benefits and Compensation Information
An additional 15% of the hourly rate in lieu of vacation, statutory holidays and benefits.
