Position Title Project Manager, Centres for Manufacturing & Energy Innovation
Position Summary
Red Deer Polytechnic welcomes you to join our team as Project Manager for our Centres in Manufacturing and Energy Innovation (CMEI). The CMEI team focuses on serving the needs of entrepreneurs and small / medium enterprises (SMEs). We have successfully completed hundreds of client projects since opening in 2009 and are seeking a Project Manager to join our team.

Reporting to the Director, Centres for Manufacturing & Energy Innovation, the Project Manager oversees all aspects of projects, sets deadlines, assigns work and responsibilities, and monitors and summarizes progress of the project, builds, and maintains working relationships with team members and external partners involved in the projects. The Project Manager prepares reports for and presents status updates to the Director and is accountable to deliver project portfolio financial and workload efficiencies as defined in the project proposal.
Position Responsibilities
Project Management & Delivery
  • Develops work plans, identifying all tasks necessary to complete project work streams by working collaboratively with stakeholders to define project scope, schedules, and deliverables
  • Provides hands-on project management leadership including developing and implementing project governance practices and framework (practices, processes, and artifacts) that are in alignment with project partner(s’) expectations including the Executive Sponsor and Project Owner
  • Executes projects and resources, both people and financial, ensuring results are found and implemented effectively and efficiently
  • Manages and identifies project risks and issues while escalating challenges to the Director as required
  • Leads projects with a People First approach to effectively deliver results, encourage team cohesion and growth, maintain vendor-client relationships, and sustain project team motivation and commitment
  • Responsible for organizing how work will be assigned amongst project team members and supporting team members is accomplishing their activities; accountable for monitoring status and ensuring project tasks are completed to meet deadlines; reprioritizing work plans for changing conditions

Financial Project Support
  • Tracks and monitors all industrial research projects and effective administration of financial activities and or grant administrative functions for centre
  • Monitors and maintains all industrial research project budgets in accordance with the requirements of Red Deer Polytechnic and external funders, and in consultation with the Operations Manager
  • Leads purchasing initiatives for the centres ensuring purchases meet funder eligibility requirements and proper purchasing process as outlined by the funder and Red Deer Polytechnic
  • Coordinates the collection, tracking, and reporting of performance metrics for internal and external reporting purposes
  • Reconciles expenditures against approved budgets and coordinates, prepares, and submits all documentation required for financial reporting including back-up documentation in support of the Operations Manager
  • Coordinates and assists with the completion and submission of reporting for the centres, both financial and narrative, collaborating with departments across the institution as needed to submit reports as required by the terms of awards/contracts, third party requests and funder deadlines

Personnel Development and Management
  • Identifies resource requirements for project teams, assessing current resources and addressing required changes as required.
  • Collaborates on the development of project teams including recruiting and selecting resources to be assigned to project teams based on, but not limited to, the individual(s’) current and desired competencies levels and opportunities for professional development.
  • Delegates and assigns work within the project teams where appropriate.
  • Identifies subject matter expertise to support project delivery and determining how long individuals may be required as project team resources.
  • Identifies the required skill levels for project team resources along with skill development approaches to address potential competency gaps.
  • Mentors and trains Centres employees; providing leadership in the areas of project management, change management and continuous improvement

Centres of Innovation Health & Safety Program
  • Supports development of standard operating procedures based on equipment user manuals and consultations with Subject Matter Experts. Integrates various sources of information into a uniform language
  • Coordinates the review, approval, and revision of standard operating procedures
  • Maintains hazard assessments and standard operating procedures by working with Subject Matter Experts to rewrite, clarify, or reconstruct controlled documents
  • Facilitates external equipment renters and CIMTAC/EIC staff through equipment rental process. Supports contract agreement of equipment rental process
  • Ensures a safe and healthy work environment by complying with polytechnic health and safety policies, standard practices, and programs in keeping with occupational health & safety legislation and regulations
  • Represents Centres at Health and Safety Committee (Division Level)

Continuous Learning & Improvement
  • Stays current on trends in project management and applied research relevant to the Centres operations and shares knowledge with colleagues
  • Oversees a central performance metrics tracking system to ensure that information is recorded, accurate and consistent across reporting
  • Ensures performance metric tracking includes information pertinent to each funder and granting program held by Red Deer Polytechnic’s Industrial Research Centres
  • Through ongoing work and communication with existing customers, will inform the Director and Business Development team of emerging fields of interest, patterns in client requests, and other information that will inform market intelligence gathering efforts that drive strategy and investment decisions
  • Represents the Centres at events, trade shows, conferences, and other professional gatherings
  • Maintains high level of engagement with internal and external stakeholders
  • Engages in on-going training and professional development activities
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate Degree in Business or Technical field required
  • Minimum 5 years in project management preferably in production or manufacturing setting
  • Experience coaching and mentoring staff
  • Experience with budget coordination, reporting (both financial and narrative), and research administration
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified PMP 
  • Master’s in Business (MBA) or Technical Designation
  • Familiarity with post-secondary administration and accounting systems (Banner), as well as familiarity with the polytechnic’s research polices an asset
Salary or Hourly? Salary
Salary $75,990 - $92,365 annually
