Position Title Payroll and Benefits Assistant
Position Summary
Are you looking to enhance your experience in payroll and benefits administration? We are seeking a full-time term-certain Payroll and Benefits Assistant to join our Compensation and Benefits team until November 22, 2024.

The Payroll & Benefits Assistant will function collaboratively as a member of the People and Culture team and is responsible for assisting with the administration and processing of Payroll & Benefit related updates to employee files and databases. The position will support semi-monthly payroll activities related to benefit and pension administration.


Position Responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
  • creating, documenting, and monitoring employee information, maintenance of data on multiple software systems
  • providing training and resource material and communication regarding payroll and benefits related matters for Red Deer Polytechnic employees, in accordance with Collective Agreements and Terms and Conditions of Employment

The Payroll & Benefits Assistant will alternate between providing support in both payroll and benefits, subject to workload volumes in those areas, pay processing and benefit enrolment schedules, and the operational requirements for each functional area at different times of the year.
Required Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of post-secondary training equivalent to Business Administration Diploma
  • Over two (2) years related experience
  • Experience in Payroll and Benefits/Pension administration within a large organization, within computerized payroll/benefit environment, with a variety of computer applications
  • Knowledge of Employment Standards Legislation, calculation rules for CPP/EI, Income Tax, Completion of various government forms (e.g. ROE)
  • Knowledge and experience of processing and uploading of data to Service Canada for ROE’s.
  • Knowledge of components of a payroll cheque including gross taxable income, statutory deductions, taxable benefits, and payroll deductions
  • Knowledge and experience of payroll and benefit processing procedures for semi-monthly payroll
  • Knowledge and experience in reporting of payroll & benefits related data (e.g. remittance reports, benefits/deduction reporting and reconciliation)
  • Experience with setting and shifting of work priorities to meet deadlines and using problem solving and interpersonal skills to meet work objectives
Preferred Qualifications
  • Some course work or progress toward National Payroll Institute – Payroll Compliance Professional is preferred (in addition to Business Administration Diploma)
  • Preferred experience within multi-union environment, working on an enterprise computer database, and knowledge of operations of post secondary educational institution and FOIPP

Salary Starting at $27.15 per hour
Benefits and Compensation Information
An additional 8% of the hourly rate in lieu of vacation. Eligibility to access benefits is dependent upon the Terms and Conditions of Employment.
