Position Summary
Are you passionate about visual arts? Continuing Education and Corporate Training invites you to become part of our team! We are currently hiring one full-time and one part-time Summer Visual Arts Technician(s).

The Summer Visual Arts Technician is responsible for set up of visual arts studios for various classes during Series Summer Arts School and SummerScapes. The types of classes included in these programs include a wide range of disciplines including painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, welding, fiber arts, and woodworking. Set up includes ensuring the instructors’ physical space requirements are met and that all necessary supplies and materials required for each course are in place. The Summer Visual Arts Technician will work with the Program Coordinator to identify supplies and inventory required for the program and make additional purchases as needed. The Technician is also expected to provide students and instructors with excellent customer service which includes providing directions and following up on questions or concerns, and gathering additional materials as required. As part of this role, the Technician also ensures the ceramics studio equipment and materials are properly maintained. This role requires a background in Visual Arts including a strong knowledge of visual arts materials, processes, techniques and proper studio set-up in order to effectively support the programs offered through Continuing Education and Corporate Training.
Position Responsibilities
  • Ensure all equipment, tools and necessary supplies for each class are set up properly before class commencement
  • Oversee (or conduct) ceramic based processes such as firing of kilns, mixing clay, and/or glazes
  • Set up and take down the weekly Student Exhibition
  • Assist instructors in showing images for weekly instructor presentations
  • Supervise SummerScapes evening activities by undertaking any set up required and being present to respond to inquiries and follow up on any concerns
  • Scan all work areas to ensure that tools, equipment and materials are used in a safe and appropriate manner and that an acceptable level of cleanliness is maintained
  • Ensure any hazards are identified and explained to participants and instructors
  • Assist with student safety orientation and respirator fit-testing
  • Maintain existing equipment and perform basic repairs as needed
  • Engage other shop technicians (i.e. trades) as needed for assistance in addressing and reviewing any safety/hazards
  • Work with Program Coordinator to identify supplies required for each class
  • Based on budget and consultation order capital and non-capital equipment as directed by Program Coordinator
  • Make trips to local supply stores to make last minute purchases as required
  • Maintain inventory levels according to course requirements and available budget
  • Ensure Series storage area inventory of materials is completed annually
Required Qualifications
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Knowledge of Visual Arts materials and their associated OH+S and
    WHMIS regulations
  • Knowledge of basic repairs and maintenance of studio equipment, including kilns
  • Knowledge of and previous experience with running visual arts studios and performing ceramic based processes such as firing of kilns, mixing clay, and/or glazes
  • Competence with computer and inventory control and management
  • Previous experience working with groups of people and delivering exceptional customer service
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize workload and multi-task
  • All employees in this position are to provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check in accordance with the Polytechnic’s Criminal Record Check Policy prior to the start of their employment
