Position Responsibilities
The School of Health and Wellness at Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) is currently inviting applications for a part-time Instructor in the Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) program, commencing April 30, 2024 until September 21 2024.

The MLA program is a certificate program that prepares the graduate for an exciting and challenging career as a Medical Laboratory Assistant.

This instructor posting is specific to our new cohort of students that will begin the program in January and complete the program in December. This new cohort provides another option to complete the existing program in a longer timeframe. Most lecture classes in this pathway occur in the evenings during the week and lab classes occur on Fridays and Saturdays on-campus. We are currently looking for instructors for both laboratory and lecture courses.

During the year-long program, students will study phlebotomy, urinalysis, histology, and microbiology. Students will be trained to collect, process, and prepare patient specimens, enter data, perform clerical and reception services, perform electrocardiograms and urinalysis, and carry out basic laboratory procedures.

The MLA program provides exceptional opportunities to work closely with students, faculty and staff in an innovative, supportive environment that promotes creativity, scholarship, and commitment to student success. RDP offers an excellent professional development program that helps faculty to continuously develop skills, knowledge, and expertise specific to teaching and learning as well as their respective discipline.

Responsibilities of this position include (but are not limited to):

  • Teaching students in classroom, lab, and/or clinical settings with flexibility for both face-to-face and online course delivery.
  • Creating a stimulating, effective, and learner-centered environment.
  • Preparing, reviewing and/or updating course material.
  • Marking, grading, and evaluation of student work.
  • Providing ongoing feedback, guidance, and assistance to students.
  • Actively contributing and participating in program planning, curriculum development & review, project work, and scholarly activity.
  • Participating in School and Polytechnic-wide initiatives and/or committees.
  • Upholding the Professional Responsibilities of Faculty at RDP, which are described within the Faculty Performance Policy.
  • Demonstrating and promoting RDP organizational values and following RDP policies and practices.

Required Qualifications
  • Degree or Diploma in the medical laboratory field
  • Current registration as a Medical Laboratory Technologist in good standing
  • Recent clinical / practical experience (minimum 5 years)
  • Excellent communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
  • Passion for teaching, ability to inspire students, and commitment to student learning and success
  • Ability to work effectively in a variety of team environments
  • Proven commitment to continuous learning and reflective practice
  • Police Information Check
  • Current immunizations as per RDP requirements
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching in a post-secondary environment
  • Registered as member of the CMLTA
Salary or Hourly? Salary
Salary Commensurate with education and experience.
Benefits and Compensation Information
Part-time instructors receive an additional 14% of the gross salary in lieu of benefits and vacation pay.
