Position Responsibilities
The School of Health and Wellness at Red Deer Polytechnic is currently inviting applications for full-time sessional Instructor positions in the Practical Nurse program.

We are recruiting multiple full-time sessional instructors for the 2024-2025 Academic year. The start and end dates are as follows:
  • August 14, 2024 – April 28, 2025
  • August 14, 2024 – June 30, 2025

The Practical Nurse program is a two-year diploma that prepares students to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) following graduation and successful completion of the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam. It is an approved program by the CLPNA’s Education Standards Advisory Committee.

The Practical Nurse program provides exceptional opportunities to work closely with students, faculty and staff in a supportive environment that promotes innovation, scholarship, and commitment to student success. RDP offers an excellent professional development program that helps faculty to continuously develop skills, knowledge, and expertise specific to teaching and learning as well as their respective discipline.

For the 2024/2025 academic year, the Practical Nurse program will be offered in:
  • Red Deer
  • Drumheller
  • Ponoka
  • Rocky Mountain House
  • Stettler
  • Three Hills

Faculty may be assigned instructional workload that requires travel to urban and rural locations in addition to teaching on the RDP campus. Travel and related expenses will be reimbursed according to the Travel and Related Expenses policy. RDP’s PN program has multiple intakes and includes day, evening, and weekend clinical, lab, and theory instruction. Faculty may be assigned to instructional workload as required to support program needs.

Responsibilities of this position include (but are not limited to):
  • Teaching students in classroom, lab, and/or clinical settings with flexibility for both face-to-face and online course delivery.
  • Creating a stimulating, effective, and learner-centered environment.
  • Preparing, reviewing and/or updating course material.
  • Marking, grading, and evaluation of student work.
  • Providing ongoing feedback, guidance, and assistance to students.
  • Actively contributing and participating in program planning, curriculum development & review, project work, and scholarly activity.
  • Participating in School and Polytechnic-wide initiatives and/or committees.
  • Upholding the Professional Responsibilities of Faculty at RDP, which are described within the Faculty Performance Policy.
  • Demonstrating and promoting RDP organizational values and following RDP policies and practices.

Required Qualifications
  • LPN Diploma with significant clinical experience
  • Current registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) or the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA)
  • Recent clinical / practical experience
  • Excellent communication, public relations and interpersonal skills
  • Passion for teaching, ability to inspire students, and commitment to student learning and success
  • Ability to work effectively in a variety of team environments
  • Proven commitment to continuous learning and reflective practice
  • Experience teaching in a post-secondary environment
  • Current Heart and Stroke Foundation Basic Life Support Provider or Recertification Certificate (HSF-BLS Provider)
  • Driver’s License
  • All employees in this position are to provide a satisfactory Check in accordance with the Polytechnic’s Criminal Record Check Policy prior to the start of their employment
  • Current immunizations as per RDP requirements

Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters preferred
  • RN with a BScN degree
  • LPN diploma with a Health Care related degree
  • LPN Diploma with significant progress in a Health Care related degree

Red Deer Polytechnic offers a comprehensive benefits package including Alberta Blue Cross extended health and dental plans, and health spending account. There is a tuition waiver for RDP credit courses for you as well as your immediate family members, as well as opportunities for professional development funding. The Local Authorities Pension Plan is also offered as an option to those who have served a waiting period. There is paid time off due to Institution closures between Christmas and New Year general holidays. This position also offers an additional 8% of the regular salary in lieu of vacation.
