Position Responsibilities
The School of Arts and Education is seeking a Probationary Continuous Instructor in the Humanities and/or Social Sciences, supporting diploma and transfer programming across the institution and contributing to our bachelor’s degree in Multidisciplinary Studies.

This is an open search, but the incumbent will be responsible for teaching a combination of first-year and intermediate courses in writing or communication studies and for developing and teaching courses in multidisciplinary studies appropriate to their areas of expertise and interest.

The successful candidate is therefore likely to have a Master’s (required) and a PhD (preferred), with one degree in English Literature or Communication Studies and the other degree in either of those disciplines or in a related field: Creative Writing (MFA), Publishing or Media studies, Indigenous Studies, Digital Humanities, Gender Studies, Writing Studies, Fine Arts, Cultural Studies, Justice Studies, Science Studies, Social Policy, or Interdisciplinary Studies.

Candidates with a disciplinary master’s and a relevant professional degree will also be considered. In exceptional cases, the committee may consider candidates with alternative academic or teaching credentials (e.g. post-graduate certificates) in combination with professional accomplishments or recognized achievements within areas relevant to the position.

Faculty in Arts and Education typically teach eight courses and approximately 250 students annually with the possibility of course release for research and/or service-related duties.

Introductory English courses at Red Deer Polytechnic could include sections of ENGL 219 (Essay Writing and Critical Reading), ENGL 220 (Literary Analysis), and ENGL 212 (English for Engineers). These courses are required pre-requisite courses for numerous programs at Red Deer Polytechnic, including diploma and degree programs. ENGL 219 is primarily offered in the Fall term and ENGL 220 in the Winter.

For candidates with qualification in Communication Studies, workload could include sections of COMM 150 and COMM 250.

Opportunities to teach in the candidate’s other area(s) of expertise, to teach intermediate and senior undergraduate courses, and to supervise student research projects in the multidisciplinary degree program may also be available according to demand and appropriate to the incumbent’s expertise and experience.

Faculty teach on campus and/or online (with synchronous or asynchronous instruction). Experience teaching online or in mixed modalities is an asset.

Because we are a degree-granting institution, faculty at RDP are encouraged to engage in scholarship and research, with an emphasis on applied research, but inclusive of traditional scholarly research, creative production, and/or professional/industry activity.

Applicants with a record of such activity and whose work will strengthen the school’s research profile and industry engagement are especially encouraged to apply.
