Position Responsibilities
Red Deer Polytechnic’s (RDP) School of Arts and Education invites applications from versatile, experienced filmmakers/cinematographers for an 8.5-month, full-time Sessional* Film Production Instructor position beginning August 14, 2024.

Our ideal applicant holds an MFA in Film/Media Production, has university or college teaching experience in film production, and is active in a creative or technical research practice in filmmaking.

The successful candidate will teach introductory to advanced courses in the program per their expertise and experience, with an emphasis on courses related to the production pipeline.

Responsibilities will include:

  • teaching (as outlined above) and fostering a collaborative, inclusive learning environment.
  • mentoring students and assisting with recruitment initiatives.
  • maintaining active involvement in the film industry through relevant research, creative, or professional practice.

*Per the terms of the collective agreement between RDP and the Faculty Association (FARDP), where work persists in the year following the original appointment, sessional appointments may be re-posted and the incumbents encouraged to apply up until the third year, after which the incumbent may be directly reappointed provided the work is available and performance is satisfactory.
Required Qualifications
Candidates must have:

  • a graduate degree in Film/Media Production or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • substantial film industry experience demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of the production pipeline.
  • a proven ability to teach at a post-secondary level.
  • a commitment to active involvement in regional/provincial scene.

All teaching and program activities occur on campus, and the successful candidate will commit to an active teaching, mentoring, and service presence.
Preferred Qualifications
Our ideal candidate has:

  • an MFA or similar terminal degree in Film Production or closely related discipline.
  • high-level interpersonal and communications skills, a collegial and collaborative approach, and a service orientation.

Red Deer Polytechnic offers a comprehensive benefits package including Alberta Blue Cross extended health and dental plans, and health spending account. There is a tuition waiver for RDP credit courses for you as well as your immediate family members, as well as opportunities for professional development funding. The Local Authorities Pension Plan is also offered as an option to those who have served a waiting period. There is paid time off due to Institution closures between Christmas and New Year general holidays. This position also offers an additional 8% of the regular salary in lieu of vacation.
