Position Title Applied Research Technician II (3 positions) (15803-SM-Black Bear Project)
Position Summary
Sandra MacDougall, Biology Instructor, Red Deer Polytechnic has secured funding from NSERC CCI Applied Research and Development Grants for the Project Title: Population Dynamics of Recolonizing American Black Bears (Ursus americanus) in the Beaver Hills Biosphere.

Students will have the opportunity for skills development and networking through primary research activities and/or field experience, including:
  • Classroom activities that will provide the opportunity for independent research projects and presentations on various elements of the study,
  • Training and Safety Plan including First Aid, Bear Safety, Canada Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), and Red Deer Polytechnic’s Animal Care and Welfare course, Lab Safety Courses , WHMIS, and Respect in the Workplace and other training where applicable,
  • Enriched experiences and interactions with grant partners including Parks Canada and Elk Island National Park, and
  • Participation in practices that will promote equity, diversity and inclusion in the training environment.
Position Responsibilities
Research Support
  • Performs standard tests or experiments
  • Assists in gathering test samples and recording of results
  • Compiles bibliographic information
  • Observes and records activities following identified protocols
  • Coordinates research by advertising for study participants, booking appointments, conducting sessions, recording responses, and performing follow-up as required
  • Checks completeness of data of other applied research project associates and makes corrections when necessary

Data Entry and Analysis
  • Performs data entry
  • Collects data using complex survey instruments or techniques ·
  • Performs complex qualitative and quantitative analysis ·
  • Summarizes statistical data
  • Reports finding in summary form

Research Synthesis and Dissemination
  • Prepares literature reviews and reports
  • Writes draft sections of research papers
  • Prepares graphs and data for slides and presentation
  • Presents research results to groups
  • Searches for relevant research papers from topics provided · compiles information from literature searches
Required Qualifications
  • Be currently registered at Red Deer Polytechnic
  • Be able to work in Canada
  • Ability to work from 8:30am – 4:30pm from Monday to Friday June – August 2024
  • Ability to work part-time hours Sep – Oct 2024
  • Proven strong work ethic, attendance record and productivity in an independent work environment demonstrated through previous employment, education, or volunteer experience.
  • Proven ability to work within a team and communicate positively supporting new and different ideas
  • Ability to complete work duties such as sitting, standing, and/ light physical effort over modest periods of time, with some opportunity for relief and task variety
  • Alberta Driver’s License (Class 5)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Proven ability to collect, synthesize, and report on data gathered
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
Salary or Hourly? Hourly
Salary $20.30 per hour
Benefits and Compensation Information
An additional 15% of the hourly rate in lieu of vacation, statutory holidays and benefits.
