Position Title Visual Art Technician
Position Summary
Red Deer Polytechnic is currently seeking one permanent part-time Visual Arts Technician to join our dynamic institution. The position is from mid-August to mid-May every year (9 months annually). As a Visual Arts Technician, you will play a vital role in supporting the technical aspects of the day-to-day operations of our Visual Art program. Your responsibilities will include assisting students and faculty, ensuring studio safety, managing inventory, and maintaining studio equipment.

In addition, you will have access to all of RDP’s Visual Art studios and a small studio workspace providing a dedicated environment should you need.

Position Responsibilities
The responsibilities of this position will include but not be limited to:
  • Provide assistance to students during scheduled class times and outside of regular class hours, both in one-on-one and small group settings. Assist faculty members with project delivery and technical process demonstrations.
  • Coordinate safety goals and initiatives in consultation with the program Chair. Ensure proper training of students and faculty on equipment and materials. Maintain ongoing supervision of equipment and material usage for both credit and non-credit users. Complete necessary Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) incident reports.
  • Maintain a safe studio environment and conduct continuous research on alternative techniques and materials to promote safer practices. Make recommendations for alternative safe practices to the Chair of Creative Arts or Continuing Education Coordinator as needed.
  • Research pricing and suppliers for equipment related to visual art studio areas. Place orders for non-capital replacement equipment within the budgetary limits. Ensure an adequate inventory of small hand tools. Collaborate with faculty to obtain quotes and suppliers for capital equipment requests. Perform regular maintenance on all studio equipment and handle emergency repairs as necessary. Coordinate necessary inspections (e.g., gas, electrical) and regularly meet with the Creative Arts Associate Dean to review the operational budget related to equipment maintenance.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and usability of all studios, ancillary areas, and related facilities for both credit and non-credit programming, as well as events and activities. Assist faculty and students with the setup and takedown of yearly and one-time events, such as student shows, open houses, career expos, etc. Undertake minor renovations and fabrication tasks (e.g., tables, benches, shelving) as required. Collaborate with campus management for major/capital renovations or repairs.
Required Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of post-secondary training or equivalent in Visual Art – Sculpture OR Ceramics; or training in Welding, Carpentry, or a related field
  • Completion of a community college certificate, including trades apprenticeships, is acceptable
  • General computer skills, including word processing and basic knowledge of creative software
  • Proficiency in art processes including but not limited to one or more of: ceramic firing and technology, woodwork and basic carpentry, metalwork and welding, or fabrication using various materials (castables, plastics, etc)
  • Basic knowledge of inventory control practices
  • Familiarity with and/or training in Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).
  • Ability to effectively communicate and build relationships with individuals in both one-on-one and group settings
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three (3) year undergraduate degree, three years of university or equivalent experience
  • Foundry/metal casting experience desired
  • Ceramic kiln firing experience
  • Ceramic technology skills
  • Driver’s License
  • First Aid Training

Salary Starting at $30.49 per hour
