Position Title Associate Dean, Career Education and Experience Development
Position Summary
We welcome to you to join the team at Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) as the full-time permanent, Associate Dean for the Career Education and Experience Development (CEED) Centre.

The Associate Dean is responsible for leading the functions and activities associated with RDP’s Career Education and Experience Development Centre, including Work Integrated Learning at RDP. The position works collaboratively with Associate Registrars, Deans, Associate Deans, Faculty, and Staff to develop and deliver Work Integrated Learning (WIL) services to learners, employers, and the community.

The position leads a learner-centred team responsible for delivering work integrated and experiential learning experiences such as volunteerism, learner practicum, clinical, and work placements; career services; and engagement with business assessment and articulation services and the community to support the institutional goal of providing work experience opportunities within all programs at RDP. Fostering reciprocal relationships and promoting the benefits of CEED is a key requirement of the role to ensure the institution, faculty, learners, and partners are prepared to engage in work integrated learning.

Specifically, the Associate Dean will facilitate the development of partnerships with business and community; connecting business and community with program faculty and learners; preparing learners, business, and the community to participate in work integrated learning; supporting the design and assessment of experiential learning in curriculum in collaboration with the Centre of Teaching, Learning and Scholarship (CTLS); sourcing resources and other supports for learners, business, and community; promoting programs to learners, business, and community partners; and developing placement agreements, policy, and/or procedures to ensure a safe and meaningful experience for learners and workplace providers.
Position Responsibilities
Academic Leadership
  • Provides leadership for work integrated learning experiences including the development of new work integrated learning modes following the current and future trends in experiential learning as well as Industry 4.0/The Future of Work.
  • Works with the Associate Dean of CTLS to ensure intentional integration of WIL-related activities in curriculum and programs
  • Works with the Associate Dean of CTLS as a key stakeholder in Program Quality Assurance
  • Works with academic programs to facilitate practicum, experiential learning and clinicals that meet and/or exceed accreditation standards, course and program outcomes and institutional learning outcomes.
  • Works in collaboration with Institutional Research to develop and implement relevant and accurate reporting mechanisms for internal and external reporting requirements.
  • Promotes the integration of all forms of work integrated learning and experiential learning with internal and external partners.
  • Acts as key expert and resource on work integrated and experiential learning.
  • Manages projects that support innovation and efficiency for the institution.
  • Acts as spokesperson, when assigned, regarding work integrated learning.
  • Resolves student complaints regarding services as per policy.
  • Consults with service areas to coordinate delivery of services.
  • Collaborates with Information Technology Services, CTLS, Associate Registrars and direct reports regarding upgrades, new systems, and best practice.
  • Manages projects related to new initiatives approved through the budget process.
  • Participates on teams, work groups, and committees representing the interests of the CEED Hub and Office of the Registrar.
  • Supports partners, faculty, and students to orient, assess, and deliver learning in workplaces.
  • Establishes appropriate service standards.
  • Supports service excellence in the development, delivery, assessment, and review of services.
  • Establishes appropriate processes and procedures in the absence of policy direction.
  • Promotes progressive learner-centred service models through process reviews.
  • Maintains records in compliance with Records Management practice, Information Access and Protection of Privacy and Access to Student Academic Records policies.
  • Facilitates change management process.

Provision of Work Integrated Learning Services and Career Services
  • Provides leadership, guidance, and support for initiatives supporting work integrated learning and career services for students in a learner centered environment.
  • Provides leadership, guidance and support to faculty and academic leaders for initiatives supporting the development of alternative and innovative work integrated learning practices.
  • Ensures resources are established for student career services as aligned with operational goals.
  • Provides leadership and direction to staff for student career services development and implementation of projects.
  • Ensures alignment of, and compliance with, policies and procedures contributing to and supporting a strong culture of learner access and success.
  • Provides leadership and support to staff in the integration of appropriate technology.

Personnel Management
  • Responsible for effective recruitment and selection, retention, coaching, supervision, performance management in compliance with Human Resources policies and procedures, FOIPP, and collective agreements in support of a high performing team.
  • Operationalizes and apply Collective Agreements and institutional policy as they apply to operations, in conjunction with the Registrar and People & Culture.
  • Consults with the risk management team regarding contracts and agreements between students, the institute, and industry.
  • Directs the day-to-day operations of direct report, as assigned.
  • Facilitates where necessary discipline and dismissal of reporting staff, in consultation with the Associate Vice President Academic.
  • Represents assigned work area as first level grievance reviewer and attempts resolution in consultation with Division of People & Culture.
  • Demonstrates accountability for Occupational Health & Safety responsibilities and the protection of personal privacy through the FOIP policy.
  • Develops, review and is accountable for the successful structure and processes to ensure the effective and efficient distribution and delegation of work.
  • Maintains confidentiality of personal information in accordance with polytechnic policy, procedures, and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
  • Approves, monitors, and reports vacation and other absences for all staff under the direct supervision; arrange coverage for all vacation and long-term absences as required.

Research and Innovation
  • Facilitates a culture of growth and development of staff to support continuous improvement in the provision of work integrated learning services.
  • Fosters the growth and development of a culture of continuous improvement through supporting exploration, creativity, and innovation.
  • Accountable for compliance with student, academic, and human resources policies.
  • Conducts research on best practices in Work Integrated Learning and identifies growth opportunities.
  • Develops and makes presentations at conferences.

Community and Communication Leadership
  • Ensures effective communication, collaboration, consultation, and liaison between CEED Centre and other institutional Schools/Divisions to forge solid collaborative working relationships.
  • Participates on internal committees as assigned.
  • Provides guidance and engagement to Marketing and Communications to investigate, implement and maintain appropriate practices and activities to achieve the institution’s CEED objectives.
  • Attends and supports events across the campus and in the community.
  • Facilitates collaboration to produce effective promotional materials.
  • Liaison with other postsecondary institutions and related committees, councils, or working groups.
  • Promotes a strong culture of work integrated learning and relationship building with organizations, employers, and communities locally, regionally and globally.

Financial Management
  • Effectively allocates personnel, capital, operations, and renovations resources within established budgets and monitors for effectiveness.
  • Develops and analyzes budgets in conjunction with the Dean of Enrolment Management & Registrar.
  • Prepares business cases and costing worksheets for new initiatives

Technology Management
  • In consultation with the CTLS, provides guidance and engagement to Information Technology Services to investigate, implement and maintain appropriate technologies to enable a continuously improving service environment.
  • Facilitates development and maintenance of effective and timely information on the internal and external websites including marketing materials (Network Drive, SharePoint, Academic Calendar and associated pages).

Facility Management
  • Provides guidance and engagement to Facilities Management to investigate, implement and maintain appropriate facilities to improve service environment.
  • Ensures effective utilization of facility space.
Required Qualifications
  • Relevant Master’s Degree from a recognized institution preferably related to adult, continuing, and/or higher education, or equivalency of undergraduate degree and relevant years of experience
  • 5-7 years progressively responsible experience related to work integrated learning and experiential learning
  • 3-5 years progressively responsible leadership experience including direct supervision of staff (recruitment and selection, and performance coaching)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of post-secondary trends
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering the principles of learner-centeredness in service and program delivery
  • 3-5 years experience in curriculum design and assessment
  • Demonstrated analytical, research, critique and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated success with staff development, project management, and application of technology
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other service, academic and administrative leaders
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in leadership and the management of change initiatives
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in subordinates’ performance management
  • Demonstrated experience in policy and procedure development
  • Proven success in the development, implementation, and assessment of curriculum
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and discretion, and maintain confidentiality
